Tell us whatever you want about yourself.

Most of all I like to go away, float away, leave.

Is photography your main work?

Indeed, I should say it is not photography but what accompanies it. Story, people and notes in notebooks are my main work. Photography is just a side-effect of all these. At least I would like to think so.

Do you have any education in photography? Or do you major in any other art specialty?

I’ve been wanting to become a writer since I was 7, so I entered philological department. Since 27 – an artist so I entered The Rodchenko Art School  but then left it. I also studied it ICA (Institute of contemporary art). But everything I use in my work now I’ve learned myself.

What equipment do you use?

My favorite camera is Yashica 124 Mat. I don’t really like its results but I like it in process of shooting.

You photograph Russian countryside and ordinary people. How did you come to this? Why is it interesting for you so much?

I like to photograph Russia. Here I can see a double bottom behind a picture, be nostalgic, laugh and feel pain in my heart. All my impressions here are absolutely personal and concern me. I photograph countryside because I have feeling that real Russia and real life exists only there.

Tell something about this photo:

Photography from «Kich Gorodok» series

This is Nina Alekseevna, we met her in Kich-town (small town in Vologda Region) near her house. Nina Alekseevna was wearing a black padded coat, rubber boots, black kerchief and with scythe in her hands – she was mowing the grass on her plot of land. When she found out about the shooting she went inside her house and came back in her best dress and shoes. She sat on the porch and made her face like you see it on the photo.

What photo shoot is your favorite?

I don’t have any.

Do you follow any photographers constantly? Do you even have any photographers/cultural figures impacted on you and were or still are examples for you?

I haven’t been following anyone for a long time and it is not that interesting for me as it was before. American school impacted on me a lot in my time – Diane Arbus, Nan Goldin, Alec Soth, Garry Winogrand and many others.

What do you think about contemporary art?

I am interested in contemporary art. Too pity that it is a rare thing to bring something really good to Russia.

Do you have a super-aim for the future?

To continue my work in the same vein.

If you could listen to only one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
